By understanding what food sources are available, when they are available, and how they behave, you will be able to select the correct fly in any situation, and perhaps more importantly fish them correctly. Keep in mind that the sizes and times of hatches are only approximations, so it pays to turn over a few rocks. The rigging techniques I have found to be most effective are also illustrated on this page and will not only give you a better chance of landing fish on the water, but increase your understanding of why you need to fish certain rigs in different conditions and how to do it.
